Thai Express
Have I told you how much I’m in love with the Pad Thai at Thai Express? Believe it. My snookey and I went there (again) for dinner. The good news is that they’ve opened up one not far from us in one of those ‘big bunch of big stores’ areas. This is not just good news because it’s close, it’s good because every time we go to Thai Express, there’s a huge line up. This spot is fairly new and so there aren’t huge line-ups yet. Or maybe there aren’t huge line-ups because it’s not in a food court.
Anyway, I like the Pad Thai with vegetables. I’ve tried the chicken and beef, but I like the vegetable one the best; it also has egg and maybe tofu in it, with big chunks of broccoli, green pepper, onion and some little baby corn.
We did an experiment. For a while, after working out, I’d have this craving for pad thai, and so we tried different places that were close to us. There’s a thai restaurant up the street, there’s a noodle place a little farther. Both of those places sucked. There was one other place at a food court (I forget the name) that came close, but still was not quite as good.
What I also like about them is that the take-out boxes keep the food really, really hot; not like these places that put your food into a flat styrofoam container. The tall, cardboard, take-out boxes with the little silver handle are great. We always order in take-out boxes because we can only eat about half the meal – then we save the other half for the next day.
Anyway, I’m only telling you this because I got some yesterday. It’s not like they’re paying me or anything. The bad news is that they didn’t have any of the nutritional information on their website. So I have no idea how many calories or carbs I’m eating, or even whether there’s MSG in the food. I emailed and asked them for this info, but I received no response. I’m hoping it’s not too fattening… maybe I’m scared to know the nutritional values.

I’ve tried to get the Nutritional Info for Thai Express food, but I can’t find it anywhere. The only info I know (they mentioned it on the news once), is that the pad thai serving there averages 2000 calories…
So going there after training is just really BAD. I mean, this is close to what a man should be eating in one day, and a girl should only consume about 1500 calories per day. And that’s just calories, Lord knows how much fat, carbs and sodium is in this as well!
When I have it I cut it into three meals, this way it’s not so bad.
Actually, the link posted is right. If you do a search for Thai Express Pad Thai it comes up with the following info.
Pad Thai (Thai Express)
Serving Size: 1 Plate, Calories: 535, Fat: 3g, Carbs: 103g, Protein: 22g
How do we know that its correct when they don’t even give the information on the Thai Express website? My guess is it contains 1500cal. Which isn’t bad if you contain an ounce of will power and can eat half at lunch and the other half heated up for dinner. I, however, do not possess any will power and generally eat the whole thing to myself in one sitting. I do have a gym membership to cover such occasions.
I don’t know if you saw the article in the newspaper the other day (Toronto Star I believe). Thai Express’ chicken pad thai has 1131 cal and 40g of fat. It is basically just oil and soy sauce, in noodles that have barely any nutritional value. If that did not scare you the sodium content 2594mg. My suggestion, make your lunch at home. Thai can be pretty easy and fast to prepare. This is coming from someone who use to like Thai Express very much, but the amount of fat and calories I just listed are more then 3 McDonalds hamburgers.
I’m also a big fan on Thai Express. I just finished having the Pad Sew with Beef today for lunch and brought the take-out box home with me. I just recently checked the calories for each different dish. Go on Google and type in ” Thai Express caliries” and the first site on the page that says nutritional facts and so on. Hope this helps:)
I have a strong feeling that 535 calories is an absurdly incorrect estimation of the dish. If you estimate by eye the amounts of calories of the ingredients when they prepare the dish in front of you, there is at least 2 cups of rice noodles to start with, which is around 600-700 all by itself. Depending on the cook, you get from 1 1/2 tbps to 3 tbps of oil, which is about 180-360. Plus the egg, if large 90 calories…I think we are quite far from the 535. The salt content is harder to estimate but by taste, I’d reckon at least a 30% percent of the daily value. And depending on the cook and the amount of spicy sauce added (by me)…let’s just say the I’d better drink a whole lot of water. Guess we can figure out why it’s so delicious, haha.

I thought I was the only one hooked on Thai Express. It’s not authentic, but it tastes good and fulls the belly
