Department Christmas Lunch
Today we had our department Christmas lunch. It was not our ‘division’ lunch because our division is not the type of division to do anything ‘people’ oriented at all.
I had been wondering if the boss, or the bigger boss was going to take me out to lunch or anything (I mean anything) and that’s just not going to happen. They’re very focused on work, and I think, hoping, that there are no staff-type issues.
Our department lunch happened in a boardroom. They served sandwiches and pizza. Wasn’t that special. I took a sandwich only to find that the lettuce tasted bad and the bread seemed stale, so for lunch I pulled the meat out of the sandwich and ate it.
There was no mingling, just a boardroom full of tables with the same people who always hang out, hanging out with each other. I didn’t get to know anyone I didn’t already know, and there was nothing really interesting discussed, usual weather kind of topics.
This luncheon was supposed to last until 4:00 but I left about 2:30, not only from boredom but because I knew that all the consultants upstairs (who weren’t a part of the lunch) would be up there sending me requests.
I was right, the work awaiting me took me until 4:00 to finish and then I went home. Off in a joyous Christmas spirit. Not really.
I suppose I should be damned grateful that anybody is doing anything for us in these tough economic times. However, I was just disappointed. The best thing about it was getting an hour-and-a-half away from the job… the worst thing was going back to a pile of work that had to be done today.
On the way home I stopped at Sam’s Club and picked up some Christmas cookies and Belgian chocolates and bischotti. I figured I’d put them out at my desk to spread some holiday cheer. Or maybe I’ll put them out by the printers so people don’t actually have to come see me in order to get some treats. Still a people person.

Sounds like not a thrill a minute. Back when I did the corporate thing I always used to wish they’d give me the five bucks or whatever it was for lunch and let me do what I wanted with it. lol The Belgian chocs sound great, though.
