We Own the Night

Family full of cops has one brother/son who is involved with some shady Russian characters who own the nightclub he manages.

The cops bust the club, the Russians take revenge and shoot our good cop (Mark Wahlberg). Not the end of story, Mark Wahlberg survives.

Dad cop (Robert Duvall) and his cohorts enlist the aid of our nightclub manager (Joaquim Phoenix) in trying to get in depth information about the Russians’ drug production, but Joaquim gets caught with a wire and his life is now in danger too.

Oh, and nobody knew that our nightclub manager was related to all these cops because he had changed his name to his mother’s name for his stage life. But after all the attempts at revenge, the Russians now know who he is and intend to kill his family too.

You know the rest. And in the end, our nightclub manager also becomes a cop since he’s all about getting bad guys now.

Predictable movie but the best acting was by Joaquim Phoenix. He was totally believable in his role and he doesn’t seem to be a hammy over-actor like Tom Cruise or Jack Nicholson.

Rent it. You know it’s been a while since you saw a good, meaningful cop flick.
