Vacancy

This was the horror film we didn’t rent last week because we thought it would scare my daughter and then my daughter went to stay at a friend’s place and we were stuck with Wild Hogs. So we rented it this week and, whaddayaknow… my daughter wasn’t going anywhere.

VacancyThe movie is about a couple on their way home from a family gathering. We see the couple miserable to each other in the car trip and find out later that they are on the verge of divorcing because, what else? Their child has died and they haven’t handled it well, the wife, of course, blames herself for his death.

Isn’t that the storyline for every stinking movie where there’s a couple? Kid dies, parent blames themself and all of a sudden hates the husband/wife. There is also the next part of the story that’s always the same, something more tragic (or scary) happens that pulls the couple back together again. I love you, honey. I love you too. Let’s never fight again.

Ok, enough of that. Our couple has gotten lost, something’s wrong with their car and so they have to stay over at a motel… a really hosy, dirty, bugs in there motel. The TV doesn’t get any channels and so the husband is forced to watch the videotapes conveniently located beside the TV.

These videotapes are scary. They are snuff films. And, hey, aren’t they being filmed in this very room?

The rest of the movie is our unhappy couple trying to escape from the psychos who are making the snuff films in their motel room.

Well, believe it or not, I liked the film. It was well done. Even the ending was good for a horror film – nobody came back to life for the final scare, and nobody who died is really alive for a sequel.

I’d rent it if I were you. There were some good suspenseful moments. And even though I’m not a big horror fan, it was one of the better horror/suspense movies I’ve seen in a while.
