Surprise!
I had my surprise party! Do you believe it? My honey actually arranged for a little surprise party for me at Eddie’s Steakhouse.
The problem? It wasn’t a surprise any more, as of last night around dinner time.
What happened was that he had told me we would go out for my birthday to Eddie’s on Friday night. And that was fine and dandy, but then I kinda forgot about that.
So last night I was home, making some dinner to be ready for when he got home from work. It’s funny cuz my daughter had called while I was cooking and she asked what I was doing and I told her I was making dinner.
Apparently my daughter knew about the surprise party (was supposed to attend) and kinda freaked when I told her I had made dinner, and called my aunt to let her know.
My honey got home from work and said, “c’mon we’re going to Eddie’s”. I said, “no, I made dinner”, and he said, “c’mon, we’re going to Eddie’s”. I said, “no, I haven’t had a shower” (our hot water tank had burst yesterday and they didn’t get anyone in to fix it til 5:00 at night). He said, “we’re going to Eddie’s”, and I said “I made dinner already, save your money, we can go to Eddie’s tomorrow, or Sunday”. And he said, “a lot of people will be disappointed and sitting there for no reason if we don’t show up at Eddie’s”.
So that’s when I knew (nothing gets by me). My snookey had actually arranged the surprise party that I wanted, and showered or not, we were going over there to be surprised.
That was fabulous that he actually did that for me. I had thought that it wasn’t going to happen, but he went to a lot of effort to do everything for me on this 50th birthday.
So, of course, I got there and there was a whole big table full of people and it was no longer a surprise. Get this… the maitre d’ hangs up our coats and then says, “I’ll take you to your table, your table for four”. Do they usually tell you that they’re taking you to a table for 4? No. Oh that guy really knew how to surprise. He walks us to a table for 4 and says, “here is your table for 4″. That’s when I look around and see the table behind filled with my family.
Those poor people were waiting for the big surprised look on my face. I could only smile. They asked if I was surprised and I said that I was, because really, if it hadn’t been for the whole ‘me cooking dinner conversation’, it was a total surprise to me and one that I appreciated.
Now the bad thing about the evening was Eddie’s itself. Where that used to be our favourite steakhouse, it has really gone downhill. The filet mignon used to have fabulous flavour, no condiments needed, and I found myself wondering if there was some steak sauce anywhere. The escargot were too garlicky (and you will never find me not wanting more garlic – except last night). Garlic butter would have been great for that but instead it was just hunks of garlic and no butter. The service sucked. In between our waiter mumbling WvTF he was mumbling, it would have been nice if we could have gotten his attention to order a drink.
Eddie’s Steakhouse is no longer our steakhouse. Even my honey was disappointed. And when you’re paying $28 for a steak, it’s good to ‘not’ be disappointed. I thought that we might try The Octagon the next time we wanted a steak, but then my aunt said that she’d been there and she wasn’t impressed with it either – they only went because one of their friends always bought them a gift certificate for The Octagon.
All in all, it was a fabulous event (other than the fact that I looked like crap with no make-up on and no showering, and Eddie’s restaurant). I’m very impressed that my honey did all this stuff for me – the camera, the surprise party. He is so sweet, it’s no wonder I love him to pieces.
