Priest is found dead in a church and the man he was supposed to meet (but didn’t) is suspected of murdering him. The police are on a never-ending chase to capture Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) because he has eluded them and therefore, must be guilty of the murder. Really, the murderer(s) is a secret religious sect whose duty is to keep secret the knowledge of Christ the man, and the related humanity, which would overturn the dogma of the church.
At the same time, we learn that the Holy Grail was not a chalice after all but only a chalice in a symbolic sense – a woman’s womb. The Holy Grail was Mary Magdalene, Christ’s wife, mother of their child, and we are learning that the Holy Grail is now Agent Sophie Neveau (Audrey Tautou), descendant of Christ. Where does Da Vinci figure into it? Fellow believer in ancient pagan ritual and clue-giver to those searching out the Holy Grail.
The movie held interest, there were a few twists (but they were guessed before-hand). Compared to the book, the movie was more basic, as usual, but then the book was hard to follow. I had a hard time remembering who were the good good guys and who were the bad good guys (all being religious, they’re all supposed to be good guys in the eyes of the church, murderers or not since they’re murdering for religious sake).
This seemed like the longest movie in history, however, I might watch it again if it came on TV and there was nothing else on, but with commercials and everything, the movie would have to be cut like crazy or we’d end up looking at an all-nighter. I wouldn’t buy it.
