The Night Listener
I didn’t get a chance to write last night because we didn’t get home until 10ish and then had to wind down to get ready for bed.
On the spur of the moment I called my honey yesterday and said, “why don’t you come downtown and we’ll go see a movie at those Rainbow Theatres” – practically across the street from where I work.
So he met me downtown, we went to Hernando’s Hideaway for some mexican dinner, and then headed of to see “The Night Listener”. I had no idea what the movie was about, but I did remember that I saw Robin Williams on Jay Leno and he had talked about being in it. Since I don’t really mind him as an ‘actor’, I thought that the movie might be a good one.
Well, it wasn’t. While Robin’s acting wasn’t too bad, the whole storyline of the movie was a little pathetic. Here it is:
Robin is a talk radio storyteller kinda gay guy who has just split up with his partner and is unable to do his show properly.
He’s given a book to read by ‘someone’ (a friend/co-worker, who knows who that guy was?) and the book is supposedly written by a 14-year-old boy who was sexually abused by his parents and others for the purpose of internet content.
The 14-year-old has been taken into custody by a caring social worker and they’re in hiding – however, the boy is a fan of Robin Williams and so is dying to meet up with him.
Robin, in his loneliness and hurt, takes on caring about the boy even though all his friends are thinking that it’s some kind of scam.
There are the usual travels and travails and nobody’s sure whether this situation is real or scam. So let me tell you… it’s scam. Ooops, sorry, I gave it away.
The problem with the movie is that it gets into the scam story too quickly and so you’re left wondering why Robin seemingly gives such a big shit about this kid when none of the rest of us do. We sit thinking that it could be a scam but at the same time we think, “who cares”, bye kid or woman suffering from delirium, again… “who cares?”.
After the movie we headed home. Gas was really cheap (89 cents a litre) and so we filled up the tank again. That’s about it. No time to write, you see?
