The Big Audition

This morning was my daughter’s audition for the “music school”. I had sent her some mp3s (karaoke versions) of the songs she was allowed to sing, with accompaniment, and left it to her to look up the lyrics on the net and practice the songs all week.

Well last night I told her she had to audition for me, my honey and my son, and she was doing the whole “I’m a nervous nelly, oh I have to cough, oh my nose is itchy, I can’t sing without music, bla bla bla bla bla” stuff.

On top of that, she didn’t know all the words to the songs, she was using a paper, and when we’d try to give her suggestions like… “it’s not A MA ZING grace, it’s AMAZING, one word”, she’d get all huffy and snotty like we were criticizing her and not trying to help.

Needless to say I ended up having a little freak fest of my own. I think it must be years since I screeched at anybody that loudly. Yes, the neighbours certainly know what’s going on in my house.

I suppose I expected her to be fully prepared for this audition and was a little *how do you say…* pissed when she wasn’t. After all, she’s the one who wanted to get into this music school and I guess I expected her to take some responsibility for it.

Anyway, aside from that we went off to the audition this morning. Parents were not allowed in, I suppose that’s in case they’re like the hockey moms and distracting the kids while they’re auditioning.

Everything went well (according to my daughter) and we should hear back in about 2 weeks on whether or not she was accepted. I hope she was since she has a really nice voice. I think she has quite a bit of potential in pursuing some kind of singing thing, although I’m not too sure on how much a market there is for that.

If nothing else, I suppose she could try out for Canadian Idol in 4-5 years (if the show is still on the air then).

I am sure that the next couple of weeks are going to be hard for her and you…

We’ll certainly be sitting on the edge of our seats to see if she gets in! :)

Ok she got that one about as well as any kid trying out for a ‘show’.

She is going to need some vocal training to do well, so I hope the school is a good one.

Oh in case you asked, yes, I do know all about singing. I was a soloist in a catholic boys choir, until my voice broke. Also my Aunt trained over 50 kids to sing in musicals and the like. And Guess who had to turn the music for her on the piano? No I can’t play, that was for paying customers…..

Yes the school provides vocal training, that’s one of the reasons to get her in there. Then she’d have her piano lessons and the singing lessons. She might turn out to do well… another Elton John :)
