Gravatars

Since there are some strangers visiting me, I thought that a post about gravatars might be helpful, since I can see by the comments that a lot of people don’t have one.

“What is a gravatar”, you ask? The definition, taken directly from the gravatar.com site, is:

A gravatar, or globally recognized avatar, is quite simply an 80×80 pixel avatar image that follows you from weblog to weblog appearing beside your name when you comment on gravatar enabled sites. Avatars help identify your posts on web forums, so why not on weblogs?

If you look at the comments here, whether on the sidebar (where they are resized to be very small) or by clicking on the page where others have commented, you’ll see everybody’s gravatar. And those who do not have a gravatar, will see my little homemade one that says, “I am sans gravatar”.

Now, wouldn’t you like your own pic to show up there? You say, “why, yes! I would! I would very much like to have the picture of my choosing to show up there instead of that ugly little sans gravatar thingy you put there!”.

It’s easy. And it’s free. You just have to make or edit the pic you want into some 80×80 pixel size, then go to the gravatar site. You add your email (not for spamming) and create an account, then they let you upload your pic. After a couple of days, you’ll get an email saying that your gravatar has been approved, and, voila, you’ll have your own pic on any websites with gravatars enabled.

Isn’t that easy? And wouldn’t that look better than my sans-gravatar gravatar?

You’ll thank me later.
