Filter Queen

My Filter Queen vacuumI have this 20-year-old (approx.) Filter Queen vacuum that I bought during my second marriage for about $1200. It’s a pretty good vacuum and in those days it came with an attachment (Aqua Queen) that you could use to clean carpets and upholstery.

For some reason, even though I never used the Aqua Queen, we had all the attachments except for the one where you spray the cleaner onto the carpets.

So yesterday we headed out to a vacuum store and found one of these 20-year-old attachments for only $20. We came home and we used it on our new (to us) dining room rug. Then we vacuumed it up with the Filter Queen. I almost typed “Fitler” which I think would be a much more amusing name for a vacuum cleaner.

Well that didn’t do a damned thing. Then we sprayed down those really filthy parts with the stain remover and left it to dry. This morning I vacuumed that up. That didn’t do a damned thing.

I suppose the rug looks somewhat less dirty. But not good enough. Now we’re going to have to cough up the $35-$60 it costs to get that thing steam cleaned. We were trying not to spend any money at all, which was why we ended up picking up that $20 part.

So I just phoned Cleanol, who take the carpet with them and bring it back about a week later, or you can drop it off for an additional 10% off. A guy’s supposed to come on Saturday to give us an estimate, but their minimum charge is $50.

What I like about this is that they clean both the front and back of the carpet, unlike the people we’ve had come in who just steam clean the top.

Perhaps they’d be able to get the dirt off the back and revive the colours which are a deeper rusty-wine colour on one side, and a more rusty-orangey colour on the other. Never mind that the centre is supposed to be a cream colour and is more like a grey in those used worn spots.

All of this crap for a free rug. Makes you wonder if the cost of the free rug is worth it. Perhaps we should just throw it out.

whats that old saying, “there is no such thing as a free liunch”, perhaps that applies to old rugs too.
