Farg

I’ve got to work tonight, it’s confirmed. But let me tell you about my day job.

I was there for 9:00 (at 8:30 actually) and waited for people to show. This place was in an underground garage. Yes, they’d created a room in an underground garage and that’s where the property management office was.

Well, that don’t bother me none Billy Bob, I sat there for the morning, training with Elena, who’s leaving to go to a job closer to her home in Oakville (ya sure), and then I got a call from the agency.

The agency tells me that the head office had decided that they just wanted to hire a receptionist for the temporary job until they hired someone permanently.

I said, this is not really a receptionist job, the phone has only rang twice in my few hours here, and I’ve been doing the invoicing, learning the different properties, and who gets what, and where the legal documents are for the tenants, yada yada yada.

So the agency says, hmmm, well now the head office wants a receptionist. You can stay for that job if you want, but they’re lowering the pay rate. I said no. The money she was paying me for the job was already lower than what I said my minimum was, but I took it anyway.

So she told me to just finish out the day and they’d send a receptionist tomorrow. I hung up and told the people I was working with about the situation. I told them I’d only be there for today, and so there was no need for any more training.

But then I thought, what the hell am I going to do here for the rest of the day? I don’t need to learn how things are done if I’m going, and I asked them if they were busy enough for me to work on something – and they weren’t.

So I phoned back the agency and told them I’d be leaving then, at noon, because there was no work to be done, and it would be a waste of their time to be training me for anything.

So I came home. That was unbelievable. I’ve never been on a temp job where they hadn’t decided what level of staff they wanted before the staff got there. And while I could have stayed as a receptionist, WTF would be the point in that?

And in case you’re thinking that I did something wrong and they just wanted to get rid of me, that’s not the case, I was learning everything the girl was teaching, and doing fine. Besides, not one of them made any phone calls to head office to whisper that “this girl is shit”. So it wasn’t me.

Anyway, after I got home I got another call for a job interview and that will be on Monday. I’m certainly free to go now.

And I’m not looking forward to the night job tonight – for the first night of work since my training, but WTF, I don’t think there’s anything on TV on Wednesdays.

Oh, and I watched The Office last night. I’m finding it more amusing than the first season, so go watch it. I also watched Boston Legal because I saw a commercial and found that William Shatner, Candice Bergen and James Spader were in the show. It was something a little different. I may continue to watch it (when I’m not working nights).
