Time to Stain

The TrunkLast night we got out my honey’s heavy duty grinder and we sanded that trunk. Not everything came off, just most of the lead paint. Let’s hope we don’t end up with brain damage (I can’t afford that) or lung disease.

Today I went out and bought a small sander and gave it another sand, but I still couldn’t get out the paint chips that are left.

I should tell you that this trunk is off the Aquatania (as opposed to the Lucitania) and is very old. During the day I polyurethaned it with a rub, not the paint on kind cuz we want it to still look old.

After sanding again at 3:30 I gave it another rub, and I will do another one at 8:00 cuz it takes about 4 hours to dry in between coats.

So far it’s not too lustrous, we’ll see after another coat. I also bought some Old English lemon oil for when I’m done with the rub-in polyurethane. We’ll see if we can’t get this gungy looking thing to shine – but subtly since it’s so old (I didn’t buy high gloss urethane).

Other than that today, I just drove around to Tim’s and to M&M Meat Shops to pick up some cheese and lasagna for dinner. The lasagna’s done now and my honey should be home any minute. Isn’t that sweet of me to have dinner waiting for him? I know, it is.

BTW my car cost me $250 for both brake lines. Wow. But it drives beautifully. There was this little jerk in the car every time I had the brakes on (like in the line up for Tim’s) which has now gone. I didn’t know the cause of it before, but I guess the brake line was the cause since it’s stopped doing it.

Stupid me didn’t realize that polyurethane rub doesn’t come off with soap and water, so I spent part of the day driving with that crap on my hand until I could get to the hardware store to pick up some paint thinner.

I got my unemployment reporting papers today. I don’t know if I’ll qualify or not but I applied since I could get in before the year was up. I worked part of the year through an agency before I went on contract, so I’m hoping that I qualify – otherwise I better hurry up and get a job.

I’m thinking of getting out of the office business. After over 20 years doing the shit I do I think I’d like to go and be a sales clerk or something. Talking with the people. That’s me. I’m a people person.

I have no idea what sales clerk jobs pay, probably minimum wage with no tips. I think it would be nice to have tips if you were a good sales clerk. “Those pants would look beautiful on you with this top”. “Why, thank you so much… without you, I never would have put those two things together. Here’s $20.”

I don’t think that’ll happen. I don’t even know if anybody would hire me as a sales clerk since I have absolutely no background in it. Maybe M&M’s. I eat their food.
